Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our systems!

Previous Next

Can I install an underfloor heating system myself?

At HCW Systems, we are committed to supporting do-it-yourselfers who want to install their own underfloor heating systems, an approach that can provide significant savings. Note that the distribution panel is pre-assembled in the factory. With the most complex aspect of the installation process out of the way, you simply need to lay the tubing. In addition, we have made a series of simple videos to make the remaining installation steps even easier.

Are your systems water-based or glycol-based?

Our systems use a water-based liquid that contains some antifreeze (glycol). The latter protects the underfloor heating system against breakage by preventing the pipes from freezing.

Do I need to plan for another heat source in addition to my underfloor heating system?

No! Your underfloor heating system will serve as your main heat source. We will calculate the required heat load based on your plans.

How will underfloor heating affect my electricity bill?

If you use an electric boiler, the cost will be slightly less than electric baseboards. However, adding an air-to-water heat pump will provide savings of up to 40%, along with air conditioning capabilities. Cold water can be used to cool air with the help of fan coil units.

Can I control the temperature in each room of my house?

Yes! Once you tell us about your requirements, we can design a custom system that will allow you to control the temperature in different zones throughout your home.

Which is better, an electric or a water-based underfloor heating system?

Electric heating wire is best for an existing bathroom floor. A water-based system requires you to lay concrete over the pipes. However, in the case of new construction or major renovations, PEX tubing will provide much more flexibility at a lower cost.

Natural gas is available in my neighbourhood and it’s less expensive than electricity. Which energy source should I choose for my underfloor heating system?

Water-based underfloor heating has multiple advantages, including a choice of energy sources. Our systems work with natural gas or propane boilers, electric or wood boilers, water-to-water (geothermal) heat pumps, air-to-water heat pumps, and even solar panels. Simply choose the option that works best for you.

What happens if the pipe breaks and the liquid runs into the concrete floor?

First of all, remember that there are no joints in the PEX loop embedded in the concrete. The pipe leaves the mechanical room and loops under the floor covering before returning to the mechanical room. There are no joints or cuts on the pipe. Once the pipe is embedded, nothing can damage it unless something penetrates the concrete. If this happens, we locate the leak using a thermal camera and then execute a repair.
